** India: Primary amoebic meningoencephalitis or PAM struck a 14-year-old boy in Kolkata earlier this month [January 2016]. Doctors suspect he contracted the [amoeba] while swimming and have warned that pools and other fresh water bodies in the city may be harboring the ‘brain-eating amoeba’ (Naegleria fowleri). The mortality rate is 98% but the boy survived.
