No one really knows when the first teacher gave the first group of students the first assessment, but we can guarantee you this – somebody cheated on it. That’s how old this problem is. And as teaching, students, classrooms, and technology have evolved, cheating has remained a prevalent problem.

Today, there’s a concern that cheating is more common in distance learning courses, when in fact there are several studies indicating the percentage of students who cheat online is about the same as it is face-to-face – although the ways in which students cheat do vary. Because of that, there are a lot of tools available for us to catch students cheating in distance learning courses, but this session will focus on three ways that we can prevent it from happening in the first place.

NEW Workshop: Improving Your Online Course (11/18 from 9 AM – 1 PM)

The “Improving Your Online Course” workshop explores the Quality Matters (QM) Rubric and provides a framework to improve the quality of online and blended courses. Participants use the QM Rubric to review their own courses and develop a course improvement plan.

The content is based on the 21 essential Specific Review Standards of the Quality Matters Rubric. Participants come away with a plan for course improvement, so enrolling in the workshop with an online or blended course with a pre-developed course is required.

Space is limited.

Upon completion of this QM training, you will be able to:

  • Recognize the foundational concepts of Quality Matters
  • Apply the essential Standards of the Quality Matters Rubric to your own online course
  • Describe the alignment of at leat one module/unit in your online course
  • Prioitize improvements to your online course

Participants must arrive on time and stay for the duration of the workshop in order to earn a Certificate of Completion.

Prerequisites: 
An online or blended course to improve. (This workshop is not for faculty looking to build a course from scratch.)

What should I bring?
Please bring a completed online or blended course ready to review during the workshop. An IYOC Workshop folder will be provided, including the 5th Edition of the QM Rubric.

Location:
The workshop will be held in Memorial Field House, Room 1060. The Memorial Field House is located in the northwest corner of UT’s Main Campus.

Most are saying that yesterday’s hottest trend, the MOOC, is no longer in vogue. But now higher education has turned its attention to the next potential disruption: competency-based education (CBE). As with MOOCs, the hope is the CBE will lower costs, increase access, and improve outcomes – and the fear is that those who don’t adopt it will lose relevance and market share if new programs scale quickly. Higher education leaders are asking how fast and how far their institutions should venture into CBE. This presentation clarifies predominant myths about CBE, identifies lessons learned by early practitioners, and discusses what criteria to consider when deciding whether to launch CBE or another type of personalized learning program.

In this session, members will learn:

  • Industry standard definitions for competency-based education and prior learning assessment
  • Common misconceptions about competency-based education
  • Recent trends in personalized learning
  • Specific costs and risks that must be incorporated into new program implementation plans

Quality Matters (QM) ProgramQuality Matters (QM) is designed to improve the quality of online and blended courses by establishing a peer-reviewed quality assurance review process. In this workshop, you will become familiar with the Quality Matters standards and participate in a practice peer course review of an online course using the review tools. After successfully completing this workshop, you will gain practical ideas to improve your own courses using QM Rubric Standards, and be eligible to take the online Peer Reviewer Certification course.

Upon completion of this workshop, you will be able to:

  • Identify the underlying principles of QM.
  • Identify the critical elements of the QM quality assurance program, including the QM Rubric, materials, processes, and administrative components.
  • Apply the 5th Edition QM Rubric to review online courses.
  • Make decisions on whether the SPCH 1113 course meets selected QM Rubric standards.
  • Apply the concept of alignment.
  • Write helpful recommendations for course improvement by citing annotations from the QM Rubric and evidence from the course.

This course is a two-week, fully online, asynchronous workshop conducted via Moodle, an online learning platform.  To get a sense of the course schedule and grading policies, please read the abbreviated workshop syllabus.
