Congratulations to Dr. Revathy Kumar (Professor Educational Psychology) who is part of the team being awarded a grant from the National Science Foundation.

Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (OH-09) joined the National Science Foundation (NSF) to announce the award of $123,859 to The University of Toledo to “develop practical strategies for broadening the participation of African American students in engineering.” The project will conduct a comparative study of the factors affecting the success and pathways to engineering careers of underrepresented minority students at both The University of Toledo and Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University.

This project, entitled “Collaborative Research: Research Initiation: Factors Affecting Underrepresented Minority Student Success and Pathways to Engineering Careers at Majority and Minority Institutions,” is under the direction of the project’s principal investigator, Lesley Berhan,  Associate Professor in the department of Mechanical, Industrial, and Manufacturing Engineering. Berhan is joined by Revathy Kumar, Professor of Educational Psychology, and Willie McKether, Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion, both co-principal investigators.  Click here for additional information.

Finding qualified teachers for children with emotional and behavior disorders (ED) has been a historic challenge for large school districts, including Toledo Public School (TPS).   Because of the nature of the job, the supply of educators who are willing to teach students with emotional and behavior disorders does not meet the demand.  Often times the open position is filled with substitute teachers.  These individuals may have very limited experiences as teachers, or are licensed in another area (e.g., Early childhood education or middle grades education).

TPS and the Judith Herb College of Education (JHCOE) have work collaboratively to recruit  a cohort of candidates who will become highly qualified educators who focus on effective teaching for students with emotional and behavior disorders. This partnership will be model on past partnerships between the two institutions (e.g., Urban Leaders Development Program [ULDP]). Courses for the cohort began June 20.  Welcome new graduate students!

Teach Toledo is an initiative to recruit local students to pursue the Associate of Arts Degree with a focus on Urban Education in a community-based, supportive environment that involves them in P-12 classroom experience from day one of their program, and provides them with content skills and knowledge necessary to be effective, dedicated urban teachers.

The Start Now Scholarship is intended to give new graduate students a “helping hand” in financing the cost of their graduate degree program and is open to students who are admitted to graduate programs (M.Ed., Ed.S., or Ph.D.) in the areas of special education or early childhood education.
