Outpacing Trends – Increased Enrollment

For Fall 2019, we have a five year high in undergraduate enrollment within the Judith Herb College of Education.  Across the nation, colleges of education have reported up to a 30% decrease in the number of students who are entering teacher preparation programs. Colleges need, more than ever, to produce well-trained teachers as school districts struggle to fill certain positions. But fewer and fewer people are enrolling in their programs.

The Judith Herb College of Education has over 700 undergraduate students in our program.  This is a 3.7% increase from last Fall, and a five year high for the College. More students are discovering the possibilities of a career in education with the University of Toledo…and we are proud of the educators they will become.

Principal Licensure Graduate Certificate Approved

The Ohio Chancellor’s Council on Graduate Studies has recently approved a new program for the Judith Herb College of Education:  The Principal Licensure Graduate Certificate.

The certificate will afford current educators, with a Master’s degree, to earn the principal license. The graduate certificate requires students to complete 21 semester hours of coursework comprised of the educational administration and supervision’s 7 core graduate-level courses and 220 hours of field experience.  Courses are offered face-to-face, distance learning, and blended.

INTERNATIONAL PRACTICUM – LEADERSHIP IN EDUCATION ASSESSMENT AND PEDAGOGY

2019 International Leadership in Education Assessment and Pedagogy Practicum in China

The Judith Herb College of Education (JHCOE) implemented its third International Leadership in Education, Assessment and Pedagogy (I_LEAP) Practicum. This practicum took place May 16 to May 27, 2019 in Qinhuangdao (Yanshan University) (7 days) and Beijing (4 days), in Hebei Province China.

The practicum was led by two faculty members: Dr. Noela A. Haughton, Associate Professor in Research and Measurement (RESM), and Dr. Marcella M. Kehus, Associate Professor in Curriculum and Instruction.

All participating students completed extensive coursework in their respective content areas, including work in Classroom Assessment, Educational Psychology, and the Theory and Social Foundations of Education.

I_LEAP was offered as an extension to the participating students’ coursework and academic experiences. All students had the opportunity to extend their in-class curricular experiences in an applied international non-Western setting and to learn about and experience educational leadership, assessment, and pedagogy in the host country. This was the first overseas travel experience for some and the first co-curricular experience of this type for all.

The three types of experiences were: on-campus Yanshan University experiences, Chinese elementary and secondary school visits, and Chinese cultural events and experiences. All delegates completed an 8-hour Chinese Language and Culture course prior to departure.

  • I am glad that I took a risk and took advantage of the opportunity to go on this trip to China. I normally would have considered going and then never followed through with it. I think taking the risk was worth it. I got to meet new people, try new food and new experiences. Seeing the different educational and cultural aspects of China was more rewarding than I could ever have expected.
  • I love seeing what the teachers are doing to challenge students to use critical thinking and not just showing them what they “should” know. It would have been very easy for the teacher to simply play the song, have the students sing it, and then move on to another song; instead, she gave her students an opportunity to be creative as a way to further learning and growth.
  • This experience is so far is showing me that there are many more ways to communicate than I thought possible through different languages. I have a new-found respect for the effects technology and individual outlooks have on the openness of communication.
  • The people here have been wonderfully friendly and I really enjoy seeing so many people smiling and waving when they see us. My learning and professional goals are definitely impacted by what I have seen so far of the culture and the places we have visited. In the future I strive towards helping diverse communities in the U.S. to live better and healthier lives. For many of the populations I want to work with, there is a good percentage that do not speak English and have immigrated to America. Being able to be culturally competent and use cultural humility correctly is really important, and experiences like this study abroad help with that.

Congratulations to the graduates from Spring 2019!  The College participated in the UToledo commencement ceremonies on May 4, 2019.  We had 140+ candidates for degrees.

Ohio Teacher of the Year Recognized

 

On April 18th, Ms. Mona Al-Hayani, 2019 Ohio Teacher of the Year, was presented with a Certificate of Outstanding Achievement from the Judith Herb College of Education (JHCOE). Ms. Al-Hayani is a JHCOE graduate (Masters of Education, 1999) and has served as a teacher in the public-school system for the past 23 years. She currently teaches at Toledo Early College.

Ms. Al-Hayani (pictured above with Dean Witte) serves as a role model and inspiration for all current and future teachers. She represents the highest levels of excellence and professionalism. On behalf of the college and The University of Toledo, Ms. Al-Hayani is recognized for her accomplishments both inside and outside the classroom.


KAPPA DELTA PI INDUCTS 21 NEW MEMBERS

 UNIVERSITY OF TOLEDO’S CHAPTER OF KAPPA DELTA PI, INTERNATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY IN EDUCATION, INDUCTS 21 NEW MEMBERS

Kappa Delta Pi, International Honor Society in Education, is pleased to announce that 21 have been invited and inducted into its membership through the Zeta Epsilon Chapter of University of Toledo.

The initiation ceremony took place on April 11, 2019 in Gillham Hall in the Judith Herb College of Education. Dr. Judy Lambert and Dr. Susanna Hapgood, who serve as faculty advisors for the chapter, performed the initiation of new inductees. Dr. Jenny Denyer, guest speaker at the evening’s ceremony, shared adventures of her 30 years as an educator. Approximately 50 inductees, family members, and friends attended the induction, which was made especially memorable by the stories guests shared of their most influential teachers.

The Society inducts only those individuals who have exhibited the ideals of scholarship, integrity in service, and commitment to excellence in teaching and its allied professions. Selection as a member of Kappa Delta Pi is based on high academic achievement, a commitment to education as a career, and a professional attitude that assures steady growth in the profession.

Ohio’s Outstanding Cooperating Teacher – Mrs. Susan Obee

 

Susan Obee has received the award of 2019 Outstanding Cooperating Teacher from the Ohio Association of Teacher Educators (OATE).

Susan Obee is a passionate and resourceful educator with 29 years experience in Toledo Public Schools. She has spent 10 years in special education and 19 years teaching ELA and social studies in a general education classroom, currently at Beverly Elementary School. For the past nine years Susan has been ranked as an accomplished teacher. Susan is not only an excellent teacher who provides emotional as well as academic support to her students, she is also a great role model for students pursuing a career in education.

Susan was nominated by Amy Fikel, her current student teacher from UT.  Fikel stated, “Working with Mrs. Obee has shown me the true impact a great teacher can have on their students. She has shown me what a truly safe learning community looks like. Her passion and selflessness is reflected in her student’s excitement to come to class. Mrs. Obee also constantly models what exemplary teaching looks like and encourages me to observe other exemplary teachers in the building.”

Susan received her Bachelor degree from the University of Toledo and continues to give back to her alma mater by hosting methods students and student teachers. Susan has mentored 7 students from the University of Toledo. Susan has high expectations for these students and continually pushes them to continue to learn and grow as an educator. She offers feedback regularly, always finding positive things in a lesson while also constructively criticizing in a way that makes the student teacher open to her suggestions and excited to implement things a different way. Susan offers our students opportunities to be involved in every aspect of the school community. Her student teachers lead team meetings, create interventions for students, and run parent-teacher conferences.

In her spare time, Susan enjoys glassblowing, beautifying her yard, reading, and volunteering.

The Judith Herb College of Education gets wonderful feedback from our students and supervisors about Ms. Obee. We are honored to have her as a part of our team and are thankful for her dedication to the future of our profession.


Seeking: Executive Director of the Herb Innovation Center

The Judith Herb College of Education at The University of Toledo is seeking an Executive Director of the Herb Innovation Center. The mission of the Herb Innovation Center is to improve the profession of education. We believe this is accomplished by supporting innovative and sustainable educational and human science research, growing collaborative university partnerships, and by offering graduate and undergraduate students applied research experiences vital to their professional and academic development. 

Within the Herb Innovation Center, the resources are in place to help foster and enhance the research productivity and continuing professional development of the faculty of the Judith Herb College of Education. The incubation of collaborative projects will focus on addressing the educational challenges that face our community partners in Northwest Ohio/Southeastern Michigan as well as throughout the state of Ohio. Moreover, opportunities are being actively sought for developing scholars (both at the graduate and undergraduate levels), and for supporting and contributing in research (both large scale as well as more local action research) projects. Specific services and supports that are connected to the Herb Innovation Center include graduate assistantship support, small grant and research support for faculty, mentorship of future researchers, grant writing development, and continuing professional development opportunities.

Responsibilities include managing the Center, facilitating collaborative research projects, supporting faculty scholars and other research teams, and assistance with grant writing and/or operation. The Executive Director reports directly to the Dean of the College.

The Judith Herb College of Education employs 49 full-time faculty members.  Enrollment consists of approximately 1200 students across a range of Bachelor’s, Master’s, Education Specialists, and Doctoral programs. Applications need to be submitted via The University of Toledo’s website https://www.utoledo.edu/jobsand must include a cover letter, names and contact information for three references, current CV, statement of teaching philosophy; recent publications and presentations.  The committee will request letters of recommendation for finalists. Review of applications will begin on April 15th, 2019 and will continue until the position is filled. 

Qualifications:

Required qualifications for the position:

  • Full professor status or associate professor with record/dossier to obtain full professor appointment 
  • National recognition as a researcher and scholar in a field consistent with the mission of the Herb Innovation Center 
  • Grant writing experience and evidence of successful grant awards and implementation of funded projects

Recommended qualifications for the position:

  • Prior experience as a center director or related administrative position
  • Expertise in program evaluation and/or research design, including qualitative and/or quantitative methodologies or case study/single subject design
  • Record of research/grant collaboration with school districts and/or community agencies
