Significant freezing rain possible from southern Plains to Mid-Atlantic through the weekend.

NWS:  An extensive, widespread freezing rain event is possible from the southern Plains to the Ohio Valley Friday into Sunday. The event has the potential to cause downed trees, power outages and dangerous travel conditions. Elsewhere, heavy snow is possible from the Great Basin to the central Rockies. Additional rain and high elevation snow may impact California this weekend.

An arctic blast that has reached as far south as the Mediterranean is generating perilous conditions for thousands of refugees in overcrowded migrant camps in Greece and prompting the European Union to declare the situation “untenable.”

Snow and sleet pounded a large swath of the East Coast on Saturday, coating roads with ice and causing hundreds of crashes. Thousands of people lost power, and forecasters warned of blizzard-like conditions from Virginia to parts of the Northeast

NWS:  “Heavy rain and mountain snow will continue in the West this weekend. Flooding is likely across central and northern California, western Nevada and coastal Oregon. In the east and southeast, arctic air will bring bitter cold temperatures as snow along the northeastern coast tapers off. Blizzard warnings have been posted in east Mass; where snow will persist into Sunday.”


A prolific weather system will bring heavy rain and mountain snow to the West this weekend. Flooding is possible in central and northern Calif. and coastal Oreg. this weekend, with addition precipitation forecast next week. Meanwhile, Winter Storm Warnings are in place for parts of the Southeast and southern Mid-Atlantic where several inches of snow, locally up to a foot, may fall.

Six people have died and five remained on life support after a rare condition known as thunderstorm asthma struck Melbourne, Australia.

“….Monday’s storm caused rain-sodden ryegrass pollen grains to explode and disperse over the city, with tiny pollen particles penetrating deep into lungs. Around a third of patients who suffered asthma attacks on Monday reported never having asthma before.  The storm overwhelmed emergency services and hospitals in this city of 4.5 million people, with 8,500 receiving hospital treatment…..”
